How Much Local History Do You Know?
Rancho Cucamonga’s story begins long before modern development, with the Kukamongan Native Americans establishing a thriving village settlement around present-day Red Hill by 1200 AD. The name “Kukamonga” comes from a Tongva word meaning “sandy place,” reflecting the area’s natural landscape. These early inhabitants, believed to be part of the Tongva or Kich peoples, were among the largest concentrations of Native Americans on the continent. The region’s history took a new turn in the 18th century when Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portola led an expedition through the area, eventually bringing the land under the Mission System established by Father Junipero Serra and his Franciscan friars.
The modern foundation of Rancho Cucamonga began on March 3, 1839, when Mexican Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado granted 13,000 acres of land called “Cucamonga” to Tubercio Tapia, a successful Los Angeles merchant. Tapia made history by establishing California’s first winery on this land. The property later passed to John Rains and his wife in 1858, and their home, Casa de Rancho Cucamonga, was completed in 1860. This beautiful structure now stands as a National Historic Landmark, preserving an important piece of local heritage.
Throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s, the community flourished as an agricultural center. Chinese laborers dug irrigation tunnels into Cucamonga Canyon in 1887, the same year the Santa Fe Railroad extended service through the area. The region became known for its olive groves, peach orchards, citrus farms, and especially its vineyards. The Pacific Electric Railway arrived in 1913, further enhancing the area’s ability to transport crops to market. Today, landmarks like Our Lady of Mt. Carmel and the Chinatown House honor the Mexican and Chinese immigrants whose hard work built the community’s foundation. In 1977, the neighboring communities of Alta Loma, Cucamonga, and Etiwanda joined together to incorporate as the city of Rancho Cucamonga, creating the vibrant community we serve today.
