A Brief History of Glendora
Glendora’s story begins in 1887, when Chicago businessman George Whitcomb purchased land at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains. He is said to have created the name from his wife’s name, Leadora, and the word “glen,” a fitting tribute to the peaceful, tree-filled valley he saw. The town was laid out that same year, and early settlers were drawn by the mild climate and fertile soil.
Citrus quickly became the heart of the local economy. Orange and lemon groves stretched across the foothills, and the arrival of the railroad made it possible to ship fruit across the country. Glendora was incorporated as a city in 1911, and the agricultural roots of those early decades still shape the community’s character today.
The city’s landmarks reflect that heritage. Foothill Boulevard once carried travelers along the famous Route 66, and a giant bougainvillea planted in the early 1900s became one of the most photographed sights in town. After World War II, the groves gradually gave way to neighborhoods, schools, and small businesses, but Glendora kept its village feel.
